High School Faculty

High school faculty who teach courses offered through the Beacon Program are selected and certified by both their high school principal and Suffolk County Community College. To be certified to teach courses offered through the Beacon Program, high school faculty should hold credentials equivalent to Suffolk's faculty teaching a comparable on-campus course.

There is collaboration between the high school faculty and Suffolk's faculty in each academic department.

High School Faculty Benefits:

  • Provided with ongoing, discipline-specific, college-based professional development, connecting high school faculty with Suffolk's faculty and collegial resources.
  • Tours of the college are hosted for Beacon Program high school faculty and their students upon request through Beacon Program Administration.
  • Beacon Program guidelines for participating high school faculty are available upon request by contacting Beacon Program Administration. These typically include:
    • Student Eligibility: Students must be juniors or seniors, recommended by their high school teacher, meet all high school and college prerequisites, and demonstrate strong academic performance in the relevant subject area. A strong performance is defined as a B average or higher, or a recommendation from a principal, teacher, or counselor.
    • Course Approval: All SCCC courses offered in high schools are reviewed and approved annually by the College.
    • Participation Agreement: Each participating high school must sign a formal Participation Agreement outlining compliance requirements for dual enrollment.
    • Instructor Credentialing: High school teachers delivering SCCC courses must have their credentials reviewed and approved by the College.
    • Syllabus and Course Alignment: Approved instructors must use the SCCC‑provided course syllabus, which includes course goals, learning outcomes, prerequisites, content, timelines, assessments, and required college‑level materials. Student learning outcomes in the high school’s dual enrollment course must fully align with the SCCC syllabus.
    • Instructional and Grading Requirements: Instructors must maintain alignment with Suffolk’s course expectations, grading system, and required timelines for roster and grade submission.
    • Faculty Liaison Engagement: High school instructors must communicate with assigned SCCC Departmental Faculty Liaisons throughout the duration of the course through site visits, virtual visits, or email. Liaisons provide support on course content, teaching resources, along with content and final assessments.
