Open Educational Resources (OER)
Open Educational Resources (OER) are low-cost or no-cost instructional materials that replace the traditional textbooks in providing students with the content necessary in a given course. OER material is licensed in a manner that allows educators to share, alter and redistribute this content without the copyright restrictions of a commercial publisher. This not only saves students money, but also provides them with electronic copies of all required materials at the beginning of the course, negating issues associated with waiting for textbook deliveries, obtaining the wrong textbook version and problems with access codes for companion online systems. OER materials give faculty the ability to customize content for their specific course and allow for rapid improvements in the quality of the resources. Suffolk County Community College is committed to developing a sustainable OER program, expanding such offerings to provide our students with the best possible opportunity for success.
