eLearning Faculty Academy

The eLearning Faculty Academy (eLA) is a training initiative developed by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), with support from the college-wide Distance Education Committee (DEC). The term "eLearning" covers fully online and blended courses.

The purpose of the Academy is two-fold:

  1. Equip faculty who are new to eLearning with the tools to develop courses and effectively use their teaching talents in an online format.
  2. Introduce new innovations to "veteran" eLearning faculty who are dedicated to significantly revising their courses.

The main goals of the Academy are to provide:

  1. All participants with an overview of eLearning at the College;
  2. Best practices for teaching in an online learning environment; and
  3. Support from CTL staff in best practices for building and teaching online courses.

Please see the complete list of eLearning Academy learning outcomes

Time commitment and obligations:

The eLA is a fully asynchronous program with content in Brightspace. All assessments must be completed by the due dates indicated in the eLearning academy course.

Deliverables:

At the end of the eLA, each participant will have completed the following:

  1. Course alignment map
  2. ADA-compliant course outline
  3. Welcome video
  4. Icebreaker discussion board
  5. Course Information module
  6. Two instructional modules

Successful completion of the above requirements will result in provisional certification to teach one fully online or blended course. Permanent certification is granted after a successful observation by the department chair.

How to apply:

To apply for enrollment in the eLA, faculty must fill out the intake form Step 1 Certification for Distance Education. After completing Step 1, CTL staff will reach out with Step 2, which is to complete a course assignment form or course development form. Questions? Please contact CTL@sunysuffolk.edu.
