FAQ

How will my credits transfer from SCCC?

A: Generally speaking, credits from Suffolk are accepted for transfer credit at virtually every accredited four-year college in the United States. However, the specific number of transfer credits you receive will depend on many factors, including whether or not you've completed a degree, whether you were enrolled in a transfer program (i.e., AA or AS) or a career program (i.e., AAS), and, perhaps most importantly, the particular college and program you are planning to transfer into. The only way to be certain is to contact the transfer college, review the transfer guide, and request a transfer evaluation of your specific courses or program from Suffolk. Please use the Transfer Evaluation Tools resource under "Online Resources" to determine how credits may transfer.

How do I arrange to have my official transcript sent to another college?

A: Upon completing your application for admission, immediately complete the Transcript Request Form online by visiting Requesting an Official Transcript

Is it important to complete my degree prior to transferring?

A: Absolutely! Completing your degree will usually increase your chances of being accepted to your program of choice at your preferred four-year college. Also, it often means that you will be able to receive credit for satisfying all freshman and sophomore core requirements while maximizing transfer credits in other ways as well. For example, courses with a grade of D will generally be accepted for transfer credit only if they are part of a completed degree program. Finally, completing your degree will give you a sense of closure and accomplishment for your hard work at Suffolk while enhancing your eligibility for job opportunities and transfer scholarships.

If I complete my associate degree and then transfer, will I transfer in as a junior?

A: Not necessarily. In order to transfer in as a junior, you need 60 transferable credits. Junior status does not necessarily mean that you will only have two more years left to complete your degree. To improve your opportunity for graduating in two years after transferring (specifically at another SUNY college), you must meet the SUNY General Education Requirements and also have credits applied to the course requirements specified by the major at your chosen transfer institution.

What can I do to ensure a successful transfer?

A: Planning for a successful transfer to another institution should begin early. The specific program and university you choose directly impacts the transferring of credits. The longer you wait to make a decision, the more you risk not being adequately prepared for your chosen transfer institution. The following is recommended:
  • By the time you have earned 15 credits, make an informed decision about your intent to transfer.
  • Think about SUNY Transfer Paths when selecting courses. These Transfer Paths summarize the common lower division requirements shared by all SUNY campuses for similar majors within most disciplines. If you want to prepare for as many SUNY campuses as possible, the SUNY Transfer Paths will help you identify core coursework that will prepare you for multiple SUNY campuses.
  • By the time you are midway through your academic program here at SCCC, make informed decisions about your transfer options, including choice of major and university

Will an Associate of Applied Sciences (A.A.S.) degree transfer?

A: Yes, but it will usually be transferred course by course rather than as a total package and the student should be careful to take all transferable courses in the curriculum.  Transferring with an A.A. or A.S. degree will better ensure a smooth transfer.

What are the deadlines for transfer students for area colleges?

A: Admissions deadlines vary from institution to institution. Students should contact the admissions office or go the website of the particular institution to which you are applying to find out application deadlines. In general, students should begin the application process two semesters before they intend to transfer. Students applying for financial aid and/or scholarships are strongly encouraged to begin the application process as soon as applications are available.

What should I know about GPA requirements for transfer?

A: The grade point average varies on the institution and your major choice. It is important to research your chosen transfer institution(s) to determine their minimum GPA requirement for admission into the college and the GPA requirement for acceptance into your chosen major or program of study. Higher grade point average(s) improve your transfer opportunities and options.

Will a C-, D or F transfer?

A: Most schools do not transfer Ds or Fs. (There are exceptions). C-s depend on the schools. Please check with the institution(s) you are applying to.
